Hadronic Production of Gamma Rays and Starburst Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
The Milky Way has been estabished to emit gamma rays. These gamma rays are presumably dominated by decays of neutral pions, although inverse Compton scatterings and bremsstrahlung also contribute. It is plausible that other galaxies can be diffuse sources of gamma rays in a similar manner. Starburst galaxies are particularly interesting to study as they are expected to have much higher cosmic-ray fluxes and interstellar matter densities. The neutral pions are created in cosmic-ray interactions with interstellar matter. Presented here is an overview of the recent work by Karlsson and co-workers on protonproton interactions and the resulting secondary particle inclusive cross sections and angular distributions. This model can be used to calculated the π0 component of the gamma-ray yield and spectrum from a starburst galaxy. The yield is expected to increase significantly (30% to 50%) and the spectrum to be harder than the incident proton spectrum.

Signatures of hadronic cosmic rays in starbursts? High-energy photons and neutrinos from NGC253
We show that it appears possible for starburst galaxies, like the nearby NGC 253, recently identified as a TeV source by the CANGAROO collaboration, to emit a significant amount of high-energy γ-rays and neutrinos through hadronic processes in their cores. We suggest that proton illumination of the inner winds of massive stars can be a viable mechanism for producing TeV γ-rays and neutrinos wit...
متن کاملEnergetic Particles in Clusters of Galaxies and Starburst Galaxies
The nonthermal characteristics of starburst galaxies and galaxy clusters are reviewed and the perspectives for their observation in high energy gamma rays discussed. It is argued that starburst galaxies should have physically similar and even simpler nonthermal properties as our Galaxy, the particle transport being convective in their strong galactic winds. They should be measurable in TeV gamm...
متن کاملAssessing the Starburst Contribution to the Γ-ray & Neutrino Backgrounds
If cosmic ray protons interact with gas at roughly the mean density of the interstellar medium in starburst galaxies, then pion decay in starbursts is likely to contribute significantly to the diffuse extra-galactic background in both γ-rays and high energy neutrinos. We describe the assumptions that lead to this conclusion and clarify the difference between our estimates and those of Stecker (...
متن کاملThe starburst-GRB connection
As starburst galaxies show a star formation rate up to several hundred times larger than the one in a typical galaxy, the expected supernova rate is higher than average. This in turn implies a high rate of long gamma ray bursts (GRBs), which are extreme supernova events. We present a catalog of 127 local starburst galaxies with redshifts of z < 0.03. Using this catalog we investigate the possib...
متن کاملUpper Limits to Fluxes of Neutrinos and Gamma-Rays from Starburst Galaxies
Loeb and Waxman have argued that high energy neutrinos from the decay of pions produced in interactions of cosmic rays with interstellar gas in starburst galaxies would be produced with a large enough flux to be observable. Here we obtain an upper limit to the diffuse neutrino flux from starburst galaxies which is a factor of ∼5 lower than the flux which they predict. Compared with predicted fl...
